NEW YORK, U. S. A
Cabic Address! LAMA.
Dear Sir:
As this is the last Auction Sale that I shall hold ’till Septem-
ber next, I shall briefly call your attention to the following- facts.
When I started in to hold Auction Sales of Coins, Medals, etc.
in New York City, I found the following state of affairs to exist.
The Cataloguer’s charges were invariable and unchangeable; 25
per cent, for selling and 10 per cent, for purchasing with no dis-
count to any one. To my view of the situation these terms were
too high and mitigated largely against the seller as well as the
buyer. Though not inconoclasticaly inclined .vet 1 believed that
in all common fairness these terms should be reduced and I pro-
ceeded to lower them as far as I was concerned. A tremendous
howl then arose from those dealers who had entrenched them-
selves behind the bulwark of high charges, with the solitary
exception of Mr. David Proskey, the Dean of All American
Numismatists, who agreed with me in my contentions and even
was more radically inclined than ever I was. Now as to the
result; I have held in New York since that time ten Auction
Sales, charging a reasonable commission to both seller and
buyer. These Auctions have been largely attended and in very
many cases new records have been established. They have also
been largely patronized by out of town bidders and have been
conducted in a business like manner with no wordy discussions
or vexatious delays. I shall continue to hold A.ik lions ot Coins,
Medals and Books, in New York along the same lines pursued in
the past withbut fear or favor and I invite your cooperation in
the future as I have received it in the past. 1 hanking you in
advance, I have the honor to be
Very truly yours
OtiOKFREY CHARLTON ADAMS.
